Starting School at Dargaville Primary School

We are a cohort entry school at Dargaville Primary.  This means that we enrol 5-year olds twice per term - Week 1 and week 6 of each term.  These children will have a number of school visits with their ECE for at least a term leading up to their first day at school. 

We also facilitate x3 school visits for parents and child.  These visits are generally on a Friday morning from 9am - 10.30am.  During this time the parents and child will spend time with their, soon-to-be, teacher and classmates.

How Do We Classify A Child’s Year Level

Children who start school in first term of the year will be classified as a "Year 1".  Children who start school in the beginning of term 2 onwards, will be classified as a "Year 0".  However, none of this is locked in stone and will be adapted to the needs and progress of each and every child.

This example might help explain it better:

Zoe starts school in term 1.  She goes into Mrs Hewetson's class and she is classified as a Year 1.

Maddy starts school in term 3.  She also goes into Mrs Hewetson's class when she starts school, but is classified as a Year 0.

At the beginning of the following year, Zoe will be classified as a Year 2 and Maddy will be classified as a Year 1.

Cohort Entry Dates

Depending on when your child turns 5 years old, he/she will begin school on the very next cohort entry date.

Please bring the following along when enrolling your child.

Your child’s birth certificate for birth date confirmation.  (You can call tollfree 0800 22 52 52 for a copy of birth certificate).
Immunisation Records and medical history.
Students transferring from another school are required to fill out our enrolment form only, and bring to office.  (See pdf below)
